Twist and Shout does accept submissions of completed short-form stories for use as backup features in their books. We pay upon publication, and also provide contributors' copies. You retain all rights to your work, and we have no expectations of exclusivity for material appearing on our pages.
No Series Proposals: Because Twist and Shout was created as a vehicle for our own work, we currently have no plans to publish series from other creators. All of our series are currently developed by our publishers and their collaborators. This is definitely a "don't-call-us-we'll-call-you" situation.
Completed Work Only: We are not currently accepting unsolicited submissions of scripts, nor do we have the resources to match writers and artists for backup stories.
Keep things short: The ideal submission for a first-time contributor is a short one. We prefer stories of 1-4 pages in length. The shorter the story, the more likely we can use it. We will use longer pieces if they knock our socks off, but rarely anything longer than 4 pages.
Don't submit blindly: Please read our books before making a submission. Our title Dirtbag is a humorous science fiction series, and our series X-Flies is a series parodying sci-fi comics and television series. As such, you can guess that we don't have much use for your grim-and-gritty superhero stories. Most of our current projects are humor books -- keep that in mind.See the Upcoming Projects section down below for descriptions of our anticipated needs, and visit it often, as we will be updating it as we get closer to publication on new projects. We are actually looking to expand the range of the things we do accept, but it's always better to email us and ask before you assume we can use something.
Please do not send original art. A clean photocopy is perfectly adequate for evaluation purposes, and usually for sending to the printer as well. We cannot be responsible for original artwork lost or damaged in the mails, and prefer not to handle it in the office if it can be avoided.Submitted work will not be returned without SASE. If you want your work returned, please do indicate that, and include an SASE. Usually, we hold submissions for a while, and contact you should we want to use them. Please make sure that all materials are inscribed with contact info (e-mail, phone number, and/or address).
Please bear with us. As a small publishing company run part-time, we can't always give you a quick acknowledgment of receiving your work. In general, we contact people if we want to use their work on a specific project, and hold all submissions in reserve until we can use them. If we seem to have forgotten you, it's okay to follow up with a note, but please be patient, as we have limited time to give our publishing efforts, and often have to delay responding to people in order to meet deadlines.
Final art will be shot down to approximately 6" wide and 9" high. Please make sure that your artwork accommodates that aspect ratio without cutting anything off. Any marks out of that area will likely be removed by the pre-press operator, nonetheless, please keep the margins of your artwork as clean as possible.Portfolio Reviews: We do look at portfolios at conventions and personal appearances. Again, pay attention to what we're publishing, or what we're announcing as upcoming projects.
If you have any questions about these policies, please contact our editor.
