Twist and shout Web site moves24 December 1997 -- Twist and Shout Comics has a new URL: http://www.twistandshoutcomics.com/ The new URL is just part of a wide range of changes to the Twist web site, which will expand to include online strips, more samples of our artwork, our new online bookstore, and expanded resources for aspiring self-publishers. "With the industry the way it is today, the World Wide Web is the best way we have to try out new ideas, and improve our craft in front of our readers. We hope to reach a lot of the industry leaders and fans on the Internet this way, and get a higher profile," said Mike Meyer, publisher. "We'll be still publishing paper comics, but the online magazine format we're shooting for will let us do a lot more than that in the meantime. We're hoping that we can establish our online magazine as a great destination on the Internet, promote our work along the way, and build a greater readership for our next release." "Besides, " said Meyer, who is also the colorist on Twist and Shout projects, "we can present our Web comics in color." |
Flies in Black Cancelled, will debut on the WWW15 November 1997 -- The new X-Flies spoof, Flies in Black has been cancelled due to low orders. However, Twist and Shout will be presenting it online on their redesigned Web site as part of a new series of online comics and previews. |
Twist and Shout unveils online bookstore1 November 1997 -- Twist and Shout Comics has now added an online bookstore to their Web site. Over 80 books are presently available, including graphic novels, art books, and other titles. Order processing is provided by Amazon.com via their Amazon Associate Bookstore program. The bookstore can be reached from the Twist and Shout home page, or directly at: |
X-Flies Special, X-Flies Conspiracy Sold Out15 June 1997 -- X-Flies Special # 1 and X-Flies Conspiracy are now officially sold out. Orders for our June X-Flies Month event through Diamond have exceeded our stock, and we are not planning further printings of the books. This part of the X-Flies run has been unusually successful for a small-press parody book; X-Flies Special #1 sold 9,000 copies in two printings, and X-Flies Conspiracy sold out a print run of 3,000. |
Twist and Shout, Dreamwalker Press to share booth at SDCC.06 April 1997 -- Twist and Shout Comics and Dreamwalker Press will be sharing a booth at the 1997 San Diego Comic Con. Look for them in the Independent Publishers Pavillion. |
Entire X-Flies Catalog now available in Diamond Previews02 April 1997 -- Diamond Distribution has not only spotlighted X-Flies Bug Hunt #4: The Truth, but has also made all of the previous appearances of the X-Flies available for shipping in June. See our order form for the complete list. |
Twist now part of Comics Site Alliance17 Feb 1997 -- Twist and Shout has become a new member of the rapidly-growing Comics Site Alliance. Started by Poison Frog Color Design's Quinn Supplee, the CSA is a cooperative effort to tie together comics-related sites in an easy-to-find collection. Key to this collection is that the Webmasters of each site actively participate, and keep their links to the CSA current, so this promises to be a well-maintained list. |
Bug Hunt #2 Has Shipped!14 Feb 1997 -- X-Flies Bug Hunt #2 has shipped as of February 11th, and I have received the rest of the printing today. Book looks great. The print run on this issue was about half that of the Bug Hunt #1 issue, thanks to low second-issue orders, so waste no time picking up or ordering your copy! |
APE IV Re-cap14 Feb 1997 -- It's been two weeks since APE IV, and much of the good feeling still lingers. By all accounts, it was a great show. Attendance was up from last year, and many of the publishers there reported that their sales were 2-3 times the sales from APE III. Met and talked to a lot of people. Finally got to meet Roberta Gregory, Donna Barr, Jim Valentino, and Keith Knight, as well as Rosearik and Tavisha from Reality Check!. Lots of familiar faces this time around. Oliver Simonsen, creator of Captain Zap, is still at it, I was glad to see, and from the looks of the cover of his #3 issue, he's really picking up some steam. Colin Upton was here once again, along with Ian Boothby, and our own Lance Gueck. Quite a Vancouver contingent. Other regular attendees included Caffiene's Jim Hill, Scott Saavedra, Oktober Black Press' Chad Ward, Randy Reynaldo, David and Maria Lapham, Zongo Comics, and of course, Dan Vado. Sy Piccone of SyCo Distribution also attended, showing publishers mock-ups of his upcoming S.C.A.N.S. catalog. It's very well-designed, and shows off indie comics in an organized format. Look for it soon. Had the pleasure of meeting Janet Hetherington, publisher of Eternal Romance, the new vampire comic in the style of '60s romance comics. Great book, and Janet is one of the most enthusiastic publishers around. Lots of interest in Jenni Gregory's Dreamwalker and John Gaushell's WasteLA. Lots of interest in The X-Flies, too, fortunately, and even Dirtbag! |
Countdown to APE IV18 January 1997 -- Two weeks until APE IV, in San Jose February 1st. For Twist and Shout, this will be quite a contrast from APE III. Last year's APE was my first convention attendance of any sort, let alone first time exhibiting. (Much thanks to John Gaushell and Randy Reynaldo for helping me learn the ropes.) This time around, Twist and Shout will have 10 of their own books on exhibition, our X-Flies T-shirts, and a selection of books from some of our friends. Aviatrix writer Carolyn Yoshida will also be in attendance, we'll be talking about Aviatrix, showing previews of the later X-Flies Bug Hunt issues , and it looks like I will be participating in one of the panel discussions, a discussion of HTML and Web page creation. We'll also likely be sticking around for Lulucon on Sunday, the first Friends of Lulu conference. Books we'll be offering include: WasteLA, Second Rate Heroes, Arrowflight, Bobby Ruckers, Dreamwalker, and of course, Dirtbag and X-Flies. This is a great chance to pick up some hard-to-find indy titles, all of great quality. (Also, I think this might be your last chance to pick up first printings of some of the Dreamwalker volume 1 issues, and definitely a last chance for first printings of X-Flies Conspiracy) |
Bug Hunt #2 on the way!18 January 1997 -- X-Flies Bug Hunt #2 is about ready to be sent to the printers. I'm coloring the flip cover, Lance Gueck and Rich Johnston's Collected Wurx of William Shakespeare. Soon as I finish that, and receive the last batch of pages from England, it's off to Brenner Printing. I expect the book to ship around the second week of February, though the Postal Service could muck that up. Unfortunately, this means I won't have copies to sell folks at APE IV, but I certainly will have a sneak preview to show folks. Be sure to order your copy -- as is usually the case with black and white comics, orders on the second issue are much lower than on the first issue. (Hint, if you really want to clean up in the collector's markets, go for the #2 issues of obscure new series, as they will be much harder to find than #1s...) This drop of orders is the norm, and doesn't reflect the book at all. It can't -- your store owner's deadline to get in orders for the second issue generally occurs before the first issue has even arrived. They have no idea if the book is good, or if the copies on the shelf will sell, so they hedge their bets and order less. If it's a monthly book, the store owner has to guess for as many as 4 issues before they know how the book is selling. For this reason, it's really important to advance order books that you really want. |
Bug Hunt #1 in stores18 January 1997 -- X-Flies Bug Hunt #1 shipped December 10 1996, and is now available. Initial orders have been great, and the series is turning out to be Richard's best work yet. Check it out -- if your retailer's sold out, ask him to reorder, we've got plenty in stock (for now, at least.) Diamond Distribution is also making Bug Hunt #1 available for shipping in February, so your retailer has another chance to pick it up. Thanks for all the kind feedback on the series. We agree, it is Rich's best work, and I think folks will be equally pleased with the rest of the series. Do spread the word; especially tell your comics retailers. |
Twist and Shout to be available from SyCo Distribution18 January 1997 -- We're pleased to announce that our books will be available from SyCo Distribution, the new distributor. X-Flies Bug Hunt #3 will appear in SyCo's first catalog, for books shipping in April and May. It's been our experience that the more exposure our books get, the better the sales we get from all of our distributors, so we welcome SyCo to the field. Keep an eye out for their S.C.A.N.S. catalog, which will feature rather a lot of neat editorial content, and will be heavily focused on independent titles. |
